7 Reasons Players Are Switching to the Strangest-Looking Paddle in Pickleball

Xcaliber Ergo ergonomic pickleball paddle with pistol grip on a black and blue background

Brand content from XCELER8 Paddles

It's called the Xcaliber Ergo, an ergonomic pickleball paddle built around a pistol grip. It looks wrong. It's USAP Approved. And the people who try it usually end up asking where to get one.

We're XCELER8 (say it “accelerate”), and we make the Xcaliber Ergo. This is our case for it, not an independent review. Every customer quote below is from a real review on our site, word for word.

If this paddle showed up in your feed, you probably had the same reaction everyone has.

What is that. Is that even legal. Who would play with that.

Fair questions. Here's what's behind it.

See the Xcaliber Ergo

1. Yes, it's legal.

Everyone asks. The Xcaliber Ergo has been on the USA Pickleball approved paddle list since January 14, 2025.

That means you can play it in any sanctioned tournament and any rec game, anywhere.

Bring it to open play. The only argument you'll get is about how it looks.

2. The handle is a pistol grip, not a stick.

Almost every paddle uses the same straight handle. Same grip. Same hand position. A design that hasn't meaningfully changed in decades.

The Xcaliber's pistol grip holds your hand at a different angle than a traditional grip, closer to the way your hand already moves.

Our players put it this way. Stop thinking “paddle.” Think of it as an extension of your open hand, meeting the ball the way your palm would.

“I felt connected to the Xcaliber ergo paddle almost instantly, and I felt like I finally had a weapon in my hands (other ergo paddles just didn't cut it).”
Amos Jun, 4.2 DUPR, customer review

3. Players tell us opponents have a harder time reading the next shot.

Because the face sits at a different angle to the handle, the paddle doesn't move the way the other side expects it to.

We're not going to claim it wins points for you. We'll let a customer describe it.

“I find I'm much more quicker in hands battles at the kitchen line and it's great in the over the head game.”
Verified customer review

4. It's been played at the US Open.

People assume no serious player would touch a paddle that looks like this.

The Xcaliber Ergo was used in the US Open Men's Bronze Medal Match. Watch the footage, then decide.

One more for the skeptics. When The Dink covered this paddle, they noted that Pickleball Studio's Chris Olson and his brother had already lost to it in a tournament before he ever unboxed one.

5. Ergo players who tried the others say this one is different.

If you've heard of ergonomic paddles before, you may have heard the story didn't end well. Bird Pickleball, the best-known ergo brand, has closed. Reviewers were hard on its paddle.

The Xcaliber is built differently: raw carbon fiber face, thermo-molded unibody, edgeless design. Here's what Bird owners who switched wrote.

“I switched paddles from the discontinued Bird Falcon Elite Ergo. With the Xcaliber I gained both power and control.”
Dan, verified buyer
“My previous paddle was a Bird Falcon so it only took a day to adjust.”
PB Ninja, customer review
“I have used other ergo paddles in the past and this is the best.”
Dennis, customer review

6. It's built like a premium paddle. That's why it costs $229.

Raw carbon fiber face. Thermo-molded unibody construction. Edgeless design, so there's no plastic edge guard to peel.

16mm overall thickness. 250 grams, on the lighter side on purpose, so you can add lead tape and tune it to your swing.

Every paddle ships free, with a premium protective case in the box.

7. Get ready to answer questions.

This paddle starts conversations at every court it shows up on.

The Dink ran a feature under the headline “Meet Xcaliber, Pickleball's Craziest-Looking, USAP-Approved Paddle.” We'll take it. Here's how one customer described his first few weeks.

“I did get the usual first reactions (what the heck is that, is it legal); but then I started getting questions like is it easy to learn, how much does it cost, where can I get one.”
Garrett S., customer review

He came back a few months later and left a second review.

“I did what I said I would do and bought another one of these paddles, to make sure I have a backup just in case.”
Garrett S., verified buyer

Straight answers to the questions we get most

Is it really legal?

Yes. USAP Approved since January 14, 2025, for all sanctioned play.

It looks like a gimmick.

It looks different because the handle is different. Everything else is what you'd expect from a premium paddle: raw carbon fiber face, thermo-molded unibody, edgeless. Judge it on the court, not in the photo.

I've played a straight handle for years. Can I really switch?

Most players tell us it takes a few sessions. Players coming from another ergo paddle often adjust in a day. Give it two weeks of regular play before you decide. That's what the return window is for.

No pros use it. Why would it be better?

We won't pretend it's a pro-endorsed paddle. It was used in the US Open Men's Bronze Medal Match, and a well-known reviewer has lost to it in a tournament. The real test is your own hands.

$229 is a lot. Can I try it first?

Yes, on a real court. You have 30 days from delivery to return it, even lightly used, as long as it's in good condition with the original packaging. There's a 15% restocking fee and a $10 return shipping fee, so trying it costs about $44 if you send it back. We'd rather tell you that here than surprise you later. Full return policy.

Is it too light? Will I lose power?

It weighs 250 grams, plus or minus 5. That's deliberate. Plenty of players tune it with lead tape. Start along the top of the head, then extend down the sides if you want more.

Will it hold up?

Thermo-molded unibody, edgeless design. Because there's no edge guard, we recommend edge guard tape if you tend to scrape the court on low balls. If you ever receive a paddle with a manufacturing defect, email support@info.xceler8paddles.com with your order number and photos.

Will XCELER8 be around next year?

We're a small, independent brand, and we answer our own email. XCELER8 is pronounced “accelerate.” If you want to find us later, search “Xcaliber Ergo.”
